Full’in Around

I have a friend named Melissa Munding. Besides being a talented painter and jewelry maker, she’s also a terrific photographer despite owning her camera for less than a year. I bring her up because she’s one of a group of artists who continually inspire me to do better with my photography.  Recently, she and her fiancee went to the Fullerton Arboretum and did some great macro work that looked like fun. Camera in hand, I trotted off.

A lot of the magic came from her Nikon macro lens; unfortunately, I don’t own a true macro lens, and my telephotos don’t have the short focusing distance her’s has. Couple that with a windy day, and macro just didn’t seem to be in the cards. Shifting tactics, I decided to go old school. Odd focus, gaffed vignetting, and some help from my old friend, Photoshop CS4. I’m not super happy with the results (samples below of course), but there’s always something to be learned. Ultimately, that’s a better result.

I think it has officially been a year now : ) Thanks for all that! Too bad you’re not shooting Nikon, I have TWO macros, and I’m pretty great at sharing. I think the first one is my favorite…I love that old newspapery look.
